Jean Loiseau, le cr\u00e9ateur des sentiers de grande randonn\u00e9e en France en fut \u00e0 l\u2019origine. Il s\u2019inspira du marquage rouge des parcelles foresti\u00e8res pour d\u00e9finir la marque actuelle. Afin de renforcer le contraste de ce seul trait rouge, il y a accol\u00e9 un trait blanc de m\u00eame taille. Cette marque est g\u00e9n\u00e9ralement positionn\u00e9e \u00e0 hauteur de regard ou au sol. Sa taille est invariable. Elle est parfaitement identifiable par l\u2019\u0153il du randonneur averti. Chaque baliseur b\u00e9n\u00e9vole re\u00e7oit une formation de la part de la FFRandonn\u00e9e. Le but de cette formation est de lui apprendre les techniques du balisage. Lors de cette formation, l\u2019emplacement et la fr\u00e9quence d\u2019apposition des balises sont enseign\u00e9s.
